How Many Carbs Per Day For A Diabetic

According to the American Diabetes Association, lifestyle management is personalized for each person with diabetes.

It follows that your daily carbohydrate intake depends entirely on you and your unique situation, including your underlying level of insulin resistance, activity level, the type of carbohydrates youre consuming, your target for overall caloric intake.

In general, a diet high in whole carbohydrates will include about 70-80% or more of your daily calories from carbohydrates. The remaining 10-15% of calories come from fat and protein.

To find this number, take your target caloric intake, and multiply it by 0.7 or 0.8. This will give you the number of calories that should come from carbohydrates. Then, since there are 4 calories in a gram of carbohydrates, you can divide this number by 4 to get your target grams of carbohydrate per day.

However, there are some situations in which you may want to tweak this number or build to it slowly.

Again, the exact amount depends on you and your lifestyle. Most of the time women need fewer calories and fewer carbs than men.

In most cases, If youre looking from a carbohydrate eating standpoint youre looking for a percentage of total calorie intake. So, if you want to be on the low carb side you may go down to 30 percent of your total calories. If you want to be on the more on the generous side, because youre physically active, you may go up to 35 to 45 percent of your total calories as carbs. That is true for both men and women.

The basic thing here to understand if you want to keep your blood sugar under control while eating healthy carbs and being physically active. If youre not physically active then your goals are down to 15 to 20 grams for women and less than 45 grams for sure for men. On the other hand, this goal can be as high as 60 to 75 gr of carbs per meal for men who are very very active.

This is quite low compared to some recommendations, but not so low as others, for instance, a ketogenic diet of just 20 grams/day average.

However, if you find 50-80 grams per day is a little low for you, research shows that anything below 130 grams per day, which is still considered a low carb diet, can provide benefits for managing blood sugar and A1c. But 50-80 grams a day seems to achieve better results.

Its also an attainable and sustainable goal for many, as a super low carb diet is often harder to stick with long term and we do want you to adopt this new healthy eating plan as your way of life, not just as a diet youre on for a short time.

Foods To Eat In Moderation

You can eat the following foods in smaller quantities at meals, depending on your personal carb tolerance:

  • Berries: 1 cup or less
  • Plain, Greek yogurt: 1 cup or less
  • Cottage cheese: 1/2 cup or less
  • Nuts and peanuts: 12 ounces, or 3060 grams
  • Flaxseeds or chia seeds: 2 tablespoons
  • Dark chocolate : 30 grams or less
  • Winter squash : 1 cup or less
  • Liquor: 1.5 ounces, or 50 grams
  • Dry red or white wine: 4 ounces, or 120 grams

Drastically reducing carbs usually lowers insulin levels, which causes the kidneys to release sodium and water .

Try to eat a cup of broth, a few olives, or some other salty low carb foods to make up for the lost sodium. Dont be afraid to add a little extra salt to your meals.
