On The Verge Of Diabetes

Prediabetes is caused when the body is unable to efficiently process blood sugars, says endocrinologist Dr. Jason Ng, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. This happens over time as the body builds up resistance to insulin, the hormone that helps the body control blood sugars. As you become insulin resistant, the body has to produce more insulin to keep blood sugars at a good level. Eventually it cant keep up, so blood sugars rise. Prediabetes may take you by surprise, as there often arent symptomsthough there are a few subtle cues you can look out for. A patient may feel slightly more thirsty and have to urinate more over time as well as the sugars increase in their body, Dr. Ng says.

How Are Type1 And Type2 Diabetes Mellitus Similar

Both types are similar in that they can cause complications if not treated properly. Blindness, kidney failure, and amputations are just some of the possible complications of diabetes when it is left untreated. In addition, both types are monitored in a similar manner and both can be treated with insulin when necessary. Care must be taken with all diabetic patients to keep blood sugar levels consistent.

Diet And Exercise Go Hand In Hand For Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

A prediabetes regimen also includes regular exercise both aerobic and strength training to help you get to a healthy weight and maintain it once you’re there, says Borcik. Plan for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise most days of the week and strength training two to three times per week, according to the CDC.

Borcik also suggests sneaking exercise into your daily activities by parking farther from the entrance at the mall or your office building, using the stairs instead of elevators, and taking a walk around your workplace at lunchtime.

And remember: The best way to prevent type 2 diabetes is to follow a healthy lifestyle, which includes making smart food choices. If your diet could use a makeover, don’t wait until your doctor sounds the prediabetes alarm to make changes. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Can Diabetes Be Prevented

Type 1 diabetes cant be prevented.

You may be able to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by managing your weight, staying active, and following a healthy diet. However, genetics and other risk factors may increase your risk despite your best efforts.

If you have any risk factors for diabetes, its important to get regular checkups with your doctor or healthcare professional. This will help prevent diabetes from progressing and causing other serious health complications.

You Had Gestational Diabetes

Subtle Signs That You Might Be on the Verge of a Definitive Diabetes ...

Having had gestational diabetes in the past also puts you at risk for prediabetes now, according to research, including a study in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth. Once you have been diagnosed with any form of diabetes, like gestational diabetes, you are at increase risk for developing this again over time, especially with weight gain, Dr. Adimoolam says. According to the American Diabetes Association, doctors dont know exactly why gestational diabetes develops, but it could be that pregnancy hormones affect how the body uses insulin. The NIDDK suggests women whove had gestational diabetes have their blood glucose tested every three years.

Is Type 2 Diabetes Serious

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that requires attention and careful monitoring. The good news is that with the right care and treatment, its very possible to live a long, healthy, and happy life.

Type 2 diabetes can have both short-term and long-term effects. Maintaining stable glucose levels can lead to better moods and more energy. In the long term, the high blood sugar levels that characterize diabetes can damage the body, affecting the nervous system, blood vessels, eyes, heart, and kidneys. These complications impact quality of life, and they increase a persons risk for events like a heart attack or stroke. Managing blood glucose levels carefully and right away, along with other health factors , is necessary for preventing these complications. Losing even a small amount of weight and keeping it off can also help improve glucose management.

Prediabetes Is A Condition Where Your Blood Sugar Levels Rise Beyond The Normal Range If Not Controlled On Time It Can Lead To Diabetes Mellitus

Written by Debjani Arora | Updated : July 31, 2018 5:36 PM IST

Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar level of a person goes haywire or is higher than the normal range which affects all the vital organs of the body. There are no symptoms that can indicate a rise in blood sugar level, this is why diabetes is often diagnosed late when the damages become irreversible. This is why it is also called a silent killer. But before things reach that worse there is a phase we go through which is called prediabetes. In prediabetes, the blood sugar level of a person is high but not high enough to call him a diabetic. In fact, prediabetes is a stage which is reversible. But if you fail to take the adequate steps prediabetes can turn to type II diabetes or diabetes mellitus.

Like diabetes, even prediabetes has no symptom and progresses silently. It is a borderline condition, which sets in before one suffers from full-fledged type II diabetes. In prediabetes, the levels of HbA1c are higher than the normal range. The HbA1c is a blood test that shows the blood glucose levels from the past three months. Elevated levels indicate prediabetes. There are certain risk factors that can make one prone to prediabetes, like being overweight or obese, leading a sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, having a family history of type II diabetes among others.

Borderline Diabetes Signs And Complications

Most people with borderline diabetes do not have any signs or symptoms. However, some people have darkening of the skin on the back of the neck or armpits. If prediabetes progresses to diabetes, signs can include excessive hunger and thirst, weight loss, increased frequency of urination, and fatigue.

If untreated, borderline diabetes is likely to progress to type 2 diabetes, and complications can include loss of vision, diabetic neuropathy, and kidney disease. Prediabetes is also a risk factor for high blood pressure and cholesterol.

On The Verge Of Diabetes Step Away From The Tv

News Across Nigeria: Delta Governor Focuses On Youth Empowerment

IF you’re on the verge of developing diabetes, parking yourself in front of the TV might be one of the worst things you could do for your health, a new study suggests.

Every extra hour a person with pre-diabetes spends watching TV each day raises their risk of developing full-blown type 2 diabetes by 3.4%, according to research published April 1 in the journal Diabetologia.

The study couldn’t prove cause-and-effect. But the increased risk associated with being a couch potato occurred whether or not the study participants were taking diabetes drugs, or whether or not they were eating healthy diets and exercising, the researchers found.

However, people who tried to prevent diabetes through healthy lifestyle changes did end up watching less television over time, the study found.

The results are troubling, given the epidemic of obesity that continues to plague the United States, said senior study author Andrea Kriska, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health.

“As time goes on and people are getting less active and more overweight, the number of people at risk for diabetes is increasing by leaps and bounds. It’s not a rare group of people” who will be exposed to increased diabetes risk due to their sedentary habits, Kriska said.

Prior research has indicated that long periods spent sitting motionless can have negative effects on metabolism, Rockette-Wagner explained.

Betting On Beta Cells

There are several mechanisms by which COVID-19 could be disrupting glucose metabolism, and thereby causing or causing symptoms similar to diabetes.

If this were causing diabetes, now that there are tens of millions of patients all over the world, we would have seen an increase in the incidence of diabetes which we have not seen. A small number of patients develop diabetes when they develop COVID-19. But they were on the verge of developing it, and the disease pushed them over the edge. This is known to happen with many infectious diseases. Domenico Accili, MD, chief, Division of Endocrinology, Columbia Universitys New York Presbyterian Hospital, New York, N.Y.

The beta cells in the pancreatic islets have been an obvious focus, given their role in insulin secretion. The SARS-CoV-2 virus binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors as an entryway to cells, and it has been posited that the presence of these receptors on pancreatic islet cells could offer entrée to the virus, and hence cause damage. The New England Journal letter says: There are several precedents for a viral cause of ketosis-prone diabetes, including other coronaviruses that bind to ACE2 receptors. Greater incidences of fasting glycemia and acute-onset diabetes have been reported among patients with SARS coronavirus 1 pneumonia than among those with non-SARS pneumonia.

I Highly Believe That Happiness Is Where We Choose To Place Our Focus

If we are choosing to see all the negatives and stress of diabetes management, we will only see that and be blinded to the other personal attributes that we are gaining that help us to be better people.

If we choose to keep telling ourselves that diabetes is a terrible disease and we’re slaves to diabetes management, we will see only that — and have a huge cloud of diabetes management hanging over our heads.

I urge you to open your eyes and find those things that you can celebrate, no matter how small.

Here is MY diabetes gratitude/silver lining list:

  • My insulin schedule helps me to wake up at a consistent hour every morning, which means I see a beautiful sunrise and enjoy a quiet morning before the rest of my family wakes up.

  • I get to move my body through exercise each day, which helps my blood sugar levels stay more consistent, and helps me to feel great about myself.

  • Thanks to diabetes, I listen to my body and I’m more aware of what foods are good for me.

  • I am thankful for the diabetes community. Diabetes has connected me with so many incredible, wise and strong people.

  • I’m thankful that diabetes has given me a purpose – To help people find their power and their voice through diabetes management.

Now, I challenge you to make your own Gratitude/Silver Lining List –– and come back to it any time when you’re feeling discouraged.

Lifestyle Risk Factors For Type 2 Diabetes

For the most common type of diabetes, type 2 diabetes, there are a number of risk factors over which you can have some control. These include:

  • being overweight or obese, especially around the waist
  • low levels of physical activity, including more than two hours of television watching per day
  • unhealthy eating habits, such as regularly choosing high-fat, high-sugar, high-salt or low-fibre foods
  • cigarette smoking.

People at risk need to have a laboratory blood glucose test performed by their doctor to check if they have diabetes. It is important not to wait for symptoms to develop, as these may not appear until the blood glucose is quite high.

The Difference Between Type1 And Type2 Diabetes Mellitus

There are several differences between type1 and type2 diabetes mellitus. First, type 1 diabetes most often develops in young children while type2 diabetes can occur at any age. Additionally, type1 patients are dependent on insulin because their pancreas does not produce any. Those with type2 may produce some insulin in their pancreas, but they do not produce enough, or it is not used efficiently in their bodies.

Another difference between the two types is that those with type one can experience episodes of low blood sugar as well as high levels while those with type2 rarely do. Moreover, type1 diabetes cannot be prevented, but, in many cases, type2 can be avoided. Finally, there are many more cases of type2 diabetes are documented.

One of the clear signs you have high blood sugar is actually not seeing clearly. Dr. Adimoolam says that blurred vision is a sign that youre borderline prediabetic. Why? Diabetic eye disease occurs when high blood sugar causes damage to the blood vessels in the eye, which can leak and swell, leading to vision changes. According to the National Eye Institute, one type of eye damage, diabetic retinopathy, is the leading cause of vision loss among people with diabetes and the leading cause of blindness among adults. A study by The Diabetes Prevention Program found that 8 percent of prediabetic participants had diabetic retinopathy. It can be addressed if caught early, so bring up blurry vision to your doctor as soon as you notice it.

Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

An ever-increasing number of children are developing diabetes. Very young children who develop the disease are most likely to be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus, a lifelong illness characterized by the body’s inability to produce insulin, resulting in high blood sugar levels. Type2 diabetes is often seen in older children and adults whose bodies do not produce insulin, do not produce enough insulin, or do not use insulin effectively.
