What Happens With Diabetes

With type 1 diabetes, your pancreas doesnt produce insulin, which is a hormone that helps cells in your body absorb glucose from your blood. Without insulin, the cells cant absorb sugar properly, and your blood sugar levels get too high. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin to survive.

With type 2 diabetes, cells in your body become resistant to the effects of insulin. This means they dont absorb sugar from your blood as well as they should. As a result, your blood sugar levels can start to get too high. Over time, your pancreas can also stop producing insulin. If that happens, you need to take insulin to help manage your blood sugar.

Swelling In Your Hands Feet Or Lower Legs

Its possible that using Tresiba could cause peripheral edema. This refers to swelling in your hands, feet, or lower legs due to fluid retention .

In clinical studies, peripheral edema was more common than some other side effects. It was more likely to occur in people with type 2 diabetes than people with type 1 diabetes. But most people using Tresiba in these studies didnt experience peripheral edema.

Note: Certain medications may cause peripheral edema, weight gain, and rarely, heart failure when used in combination with Tresiba. For more information, see the Precautions for Tresiba section near the end of this article.

What you can do

While using Tresiba, watch for any symptoms of fluid retention, such as swelling. This type of swelling most commonly occurs in your hands, feet, and lower legs, particularly your ankles.

If you notice swelling, talk with your doctor. They may want to examine you to determine the cause. Your doctor may recommend a medication to treat this side effect or advise you to stop using Tresiba and try a different medication for your diabetes.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the medications you take before you begin Tresiba treatment. Theyll review your medications for any possible interactions, including those that could cause peripheral edema.

Above 21 Years Of Age:

Insulin Degludec Tresiba Penfill, Pack Size: 5x3 mL, Rs 3800 /unit

Adults above the age of 21 years tend to represent a different insulin need. They are more likely to experience a spike in blood sugar levels during the early morning hours and find it drops towards noon. It will usually come to a low-flat reading in the afternoon and then again increases over the course of the evening.

This peak in basal insulin during the early morning hours is commonly referred to as the dawn phenomenon.

This is only a general or common breakdown of how blood sugar levels and insulin needs work for people below and above 21.

The pattern can certainly change depending on your diet, physical activity, exercise pattern, lifestyle, and other medical conditions.

While you are free to follow this advice, as always, we recommend that you consult with your doctor in this regard.

Because Tresiba lasts up to 42 hours and does not have a peak, adults can take it at any time. Though a persons basal insulin needs may vary throughout the day, Tresiba should still be effective, as long as the patient is taking it once a day or as recommended by the doctor.

If you experience hair loss with Tresiba, its probably not caused by the drug. Hair loss wasnt a side effect reported in people taking Tresiba in studies.

Exceptions For Kids On When To Take Tresiba

Although Tresiba is popular for its flexibility in dosing, children are generally recommended to take Tresiba at the same time each day.

If a child misses one dose, it should immediately be reported to the doctor.

In such an occurrence, the blood sugar levels of children should be closely monitored as well.

What Is Tresiba Used For

Tresiba is used to lower blood sugar in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The Food and Drug Administration approved Tresiba for use in adults and children 1 year and older.

People with type 1 diabetes dont make enough insulin, which causes blood sugar levels to become too high. If you have type 1 diabetes, youll need to use Tresiba with short-acting insulin to control your blood sugar.

People with type 2 diabetes have trouble keeping their blood sugar in a healthy range because their bodies do not use insulin normally. If you have type 2 diabetes, your healthcare provider may prescribe Tresiba with short-acting insulin or with oral diabetes medications.

Uncontrolled diabetes and high blood sugar can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening problems. Over time, you may be at increased risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, nerve damage, and eye problems. Tresiba can help lower your risk, especially when used with lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise.

Is Tresiba Used For Diabetes

Tresiba is used to manage blood sugar levels in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Its prescribed for use in children ages 1 year and older and in adults. With type 1 diabetes, your body doesnt make insulin. With type 2 diabetes, your body doesnt make enough insulin to control your blood sugar levels. Tresiba treats type 1 and type 2 diabetes by working like natural insulin. Once you inject Tresiba, the insulin is absorbed into your blood and works to control your sugar levels.

Tresiba may be used with other diabetes medications. It may be combined with short-acting insulin for type 1 diabetes and with oral medication for type 2. If you have questions about your treatment plan for managing diabetes, talk with your doctor.

How Does Tresibas Dosing Compare With That Of Lantus

Heres some information about how Tresiba and Lantus are alike and different in terms of dosing for type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Both Tresiba and Lantus are given by subcutaneous injection. And both come as prefilled pens or vials. Tresiba pens are called FlexTouch pens, while Lantus pens are called SoloStar pens. Below are some other similarities and differences between the two drugs:

  • Adults with type 1 diabetes. To treat type 1 diabetes in adults with either drug, the doctor will calculate the total daily dose of insulin using body weight. In addition, Tresiba may be used alone to treat type 1 diabetes. Lantus, on the other hand, must be used with a short-acting insulin, such as insulin aspart .
  • Children with type 1 diabetes. For treating type 1 diabetes in children, the dosages of Tresiba and Lantus are the same as those for adults.
  • Adults with type 2 diabetes. For treating type 2 diabetes in adults, the starting doses of Tresiba and Lantus differ.
  • Children with type 2 diabetes. Tresiba is approved to treat type 2 diabetes in children ages 1 year and older. Lantus hasnt been studied in children with type 2 diabetes, so there isnt a recommended dose of the drug for this age group.

For more details about Tresibas dosing, see the Tresiba dosage section above or ask your doctor. For specifics about the dosing for Lantus, you can refer to this article or talk with your doctor.
