At What Point Does High Blood Pressure Cause A Problem For People With Diabetes

How to control blood sugar and low blood pressure

If your resting blood pressure level is above the targets, this puts you at an increased risk of heart and vascular problems as well as other diabetes complications, such as kidney disease and sight damage .

High blood pressure is also associated with poor circulation which increases the risk of foot ulcers and can lead to foot amputation if regular foot care is not taken.

What Is High Blood Pressure

Individuals with high blood pressure struggle with blood pumping through their heart and blood vessels with too much force. If this continues for an extended length of time, the high pressure can tire and enlarge the heart muscle.

While readings can vary, most people with diabetes should have a blood pressure of no more than 130/80. The top number is the systolic pressure, or the pressure in your arteries when your heart squeezes and fills the vessels with blood. The second number, the diastolic pressure, is the pressure when your heart is at rest.

Healthy people should get their blood pressure checked once every two years. That number increases to four times each year for people living with diabetes. Fortunately, there are free blood pressure screenings available through several Canopy Health alliance affiliates, including John Muir Health.

Overdose Of Diabetes Medication

A common cause of hypoglycaemia is taking too much insulin for your current needs. Insulin is a medication that helps control your blood glucose levels. It’s commonly used to treat type 1 diabetes and is also recommended for some people with type 2 diabetes.

A fall in blood glucose levels can also occur after taking too much oral hypoglycaemia medication, such as sulphonylurea, which causes a release of insulin. This medication is often used to lower blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

Medications That Can Cause Low Blood Pressure:

Dopamine Antagonists: These are a types of drugs used to treat patients in the more advanced stages of Parkinson s disease, also with Alzheimers and alcoholism.

The name is actually misleading, because what the medication does the opposite of what you think. Episodes for Perkins, those are when there are no dopamine. So the antagonist hits a receptor, forcing dopamine out which then relieves the patient. Brand names: apomorphine .

Antianginals: Antianginal drugs are prescribed because of severe cardiac pain because of a condition called angina pectitis she wasnt getting enough blood up.

These are medications that relieve stress from the heart by easing blood flow through the myocardium and increasing oxygen Antiangianls take stress off the heart and do a lot of wonder. There are 3 types of Anti anginas, aneh fist Nitrates, that straight down to the Drugs: Ranolazine.

Antiarrhyrhmics: Drugs that help the drug keep a healthy and safe rhythm following a heart attack. They are actually able to shoulder the load of the heart, so the heart doesnt have to beat as hard.

Theres different ways that Antiarrhyrhmics work, but they all like to keep the heart and its various parts very relaxed. They keep the blood vessels open nice and wide and because high blood pressure lives off of constricting of vessels, the job of these Antiarrhymics is to not let high blood pressure have a job at all. Makes perfect sense.to me.

When Blood Pressure Is Too Low

Talk around blood pressure typically centers on what to do if blood pressure is too high. We know that high blood pressure is more common in people with diabetes than people without diabetes. We also know that uncontrolled high blood pressure is a risk factor for stroke, heart disease, and kidney disease. The American Diabetes Association recommends a blood pressure goal of less than 140/80 for most people with diabetes. But what if your blood pressure is too low? Is it cause for concern? And what do you do about it?

Low blood pressure definedLow blood pressure is also known as hypotension. You might be thinking that low blood pressure is a good thing, especially if yours tends to run on the high side. But the reality is that low blood pressure can be a serious condition for some people.

For people without diabetes, the American Heart Association recommends a blood pressure of less than 120 over 80 . Low blood pressure is generally defined as a blood pressure of less than 90/60. If your blood pressure tends to hover in that area without any symptoms, then theres likely no cause for concern. But if symptoms occur, thats a signal that something is amiss.

Symptoms of low blood pressureLow blood pressure may be a sign that theres an underlying medical condition, especially if your blood pressure drops suddenly or if you have the following symptoms:

Dizziness or lightheadedness Depression Dehydration

Prolonged bed rest. This can trigger orthostatic hypotension.

Treating Low Blood Sugar

You are at risk of having a low blood sugar reaction if you:

  • Skip or delay a meal or snack
  • Take too much insulin or eat too few carbohydrates
  • Exercise
  • Drink alcohol, especially without eating carbohydrates

Check your blood sugar if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Weakness and/or fatigue

If your blood sugar is less than 70 milligrams per deciliter :

  • Eat 15 to 30 grams of carbohydrate
  • Wait 15 minutes and then recheck your blood sugar
  • If your blood sugar is still less than 100 mg/dl, take another 15 grams of carbohydrate and retest your blood sugar in another 15 minutes. Repeat if necessary.

Important: If you have frequent low blood sugars speak to your doctor. You may need changes in your medication and/or meal plan.

What Do Blood Pressure Numbers Mean

Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury, as two figures, for example 124/80 mmHg.

  • The first number is known as systolic pressure pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts.
  • The second number is diastolic pressure the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests.

Blood pressure is important to track because high blood pressure is associated with a greater risk of organ damage, such as kidney damage and retinal damage, in people with diabetes.

High blood pressure tends to be quite closely associated with people with type 2 diabetes, but keeping blood pressure levels healthy applies to all people with diabetes and we should have our blood pressure measured at least once each year.

Because of the extra threat of organ damage, people with diabetes are actually given more strict targets for blood pressure than other patients.

Non-diabetic people have a target of keeping below 140 over 80 millimetres of mercury.

For people with diabetes, the target is below 130 over 80.

You might ask what these numbers mean. The first number is the pressure in the blood vessels at the point in which the heart pumps. The second number is the measurement of the pressure when the heart is resting between each beats.

The thing about conventional blood pressure checks is that they give a reading only relevant to the time youre having the check.

If youre not completely relaxed at the time of the check, you could get a reading thats higher than it should be.

  • 1 slice toast and 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup milk

The food eaten for a reaction need not be subtracted from a meal plan.

Obtain a blood sugar when symptoms occur if you are able. If symptoms are severe, treat the reaction first and then obtain a blood sugar. Do not drive nor operate equipment if you feel your blood sugar is low.

If your blood sugar drops low enough for you to become unconscious, you must be taken to the hospital and/or treated with glucagon.

Glucagon is a hormone that causes the blood sugar to rise. It can only be given by injection. It is used to treat a low blood sugar if a person becomes semi-conscious or unconscious due to a severe low blood sugar. Please ask your nurse for instruction on glucagon. Your doctor will need to write a prescription for glucagon so you can have it available at home.

Diet To Lower Blood Pressure And Blood Sugar

Surprisingly, the most dangerous episodes of hypoglycemia occur with little or no warning. When low blood glucose occurs on a regular basis, the body can become used to the warning signs and the person may stop noticing symptoms. This is a particularly dangerous condition known as hypoglycemic unawareness. People with this condition might not realize they have low blood glucose until it’s dangerously low seizures and coma are sometimes the first indication of a problem. The good news is that this condition can often be reversed allowing people to once again notice the signs of low blood glucose if hypoglycemia is avoided for a few weeks through careful monitoring of blood glucose.

Diagnosing Low Blood Pressure

Your doctor will prescribe a blood pressure test to diagnose low blood pressure, which involves measuring blood pressure in the arm with a blood pressure cuff. Other tests may include blood tests or urine samples. In some cases, one can prescribe to physiological examinations in which to measure blood pressure after a sudden change in body position. These examinations are conducted in specialists in clinical physiology or biomedical analysts.

Causes Of Low Blood Glucose

Low blood glucose is common for people with type 1 diabetes and can occur in people with type 2 diabetes taking insulin or certain medications. The average person with type 1 diabetes may experience up to two episodes of mild low blood glucose each week, and thats only counting episodes with symptoms. If you add in lows without symptoms and the ones that happen overnight, the number would likely be higher.

How Is High Blood Pressure Diagnosed

Anxiety, stress or strenuous exercise can all cause temporary high blood pressure levels in both diabetics and non-diabetics. However, high blood pressure is diagnosed when you have several high readings.

Some people will find their heart beat rises, and therefore their blood pressure goes up, as a direct result of being tested. If you know this is happening, speak to the doctor or nurse as this should be taken into account.

It is possible to have blood pressure readings taken at home if this is known to be happening.

Hypoglycemia In Children: Pediatric Ketotic Hypoglycemia

Some children experience pediatric ketotic hypoglycemia, a condition involving low blood sugar levels and high levels of ketones. If people do not have enough glucose to use as energy, the body begins to break down fat in the body instead. The body produces chemicals called ketones as a by-product of breaking down fat.

According to a 2019 study , pediatric ketotic hypoglycemia usually occurs due to poor intake of food, a gastrointestinal illness and vomiting, or a period of prolonged fasting. Severe metabolic and hormonal conditions may also cause pediatric ketotic hypoglycemia.

Pediatric ketotic hypoglycemia may affect children from 6 months old and often resolves after the age of 6 years.

How Your Body Regulates Blood Pressure

A similar set of processes apply to maintaining a healthy blood pressure level. In many ways, keeping your blood pressure in a good range is even more critical than keeping your blood glucose in a good range. Your body has a myriad of ways to make more blood sugar as well as making alternative sources of energy like ketones. But we dont have any way to make more blood pressure. The body can protect blood glucose levels much better than it can protect blood pressure. If we are experiencinglow blood volume, we cant add more instantly. If we dont have enough blood, we will pass out and this is very dangerous to the brain and body long term.

With limited options for raising blood pressure, the body relies on the same hormones that get activated when blood glucose is lowcatecholamine, or adrenalin, hormonesto affect this change. Catecholamines tighten up our blood vessels, making it harder for the heart to pump the blood through our arteries, which raises blood pressure.

People with, a condition in which blood pressure is elevated, dont lack the ability to control their blood pressure. But like the person with diabetes, their sensors are impaired and their response to high or low blood pressure isnt always on the mark.
