Choosing Safe Complementary Medications

Alternative Therapy Type 1 Diabetes, Breast Cancer – Sunridge Medical, Dr. Franco

The Therapeutic Goods Administration divides medicines into two categories:

  • Registered medicines are those which treat serious medical conditions and/or which are considered higher risk. All prescription medicines are registered, along with some over the counter medicines, such as some pain killers and cough mixtures.
  • Listed medicines are those which are designed to treat minor conditions and which are considered to be lower risk. Most natural and complementary medicines are listed medicines.

While registered and listed medicines may look the same on the pharmacy shelf, the testing process they undergo by the TGA is very different.

Other Drugs For Type 1 Diabetes

The following drugs, non-insulin injectables, are also common for people treating type 1 diabetes:

  • Amylin analogs: Pramlintide mimics another hormone, amylin, that plays a role in glucose regulation.
  • Glucagon can reverse blood sugar levels when they fall too low as a result of insulin treatment.

Insulin can also help manage high blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes, but doctors typically prescribe it only when other treatments have not had the desired effect.

Women with type 2 diabetes who become pregnant may also use it to reduce the effects of the condition on the fetus.

In people with high blood glucose levels in spite of applying lifestyle measures to bring them down, doctors can prescribe non-insulin drugs to lower blood glucose. These drugs are listed below.

Many of the drugs have a combination of effects. If a person needs two or more treatments to manage glucose levels, insulin treatment may be necessary.

Nhp For The Treatment Of The Co

A number of NHP have been evaluated for the various co-morbidities and complications of diabetes, including lipids and blood pressure in diabetes, as well as CVD, nephropathy, retinopathy and peripheral neuropathy. As with the studies of glycemic control, most had small sample sizes and meta-analyses had marked heterogeneity of included studies, making strong conclusions difficult.

Randomized controlled trials demonstrating a benefit on lipid parameters in diabetes include: Ayurvedic polyherbal formulation , Hintonia latiflora and magnesium . In postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes, vitamin D supplementation for 6 months reduced serum triglycerides without effect on other lipid parameters , while a meta-analysis with high heterogeneity showed benefit on lowering total cholesterol and TG . Other studies have failed to show significant benefit of vitamin D supplementation on lipids in people with diabetes . A meta-analysis of Berberine showed it to reduce TG and increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol more than traditional lipid-lowering drugs, with no difference on total or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol . Berberine was also shown to reduce total and LDL-C and increase HDL-C combined with traditional lipid-lowering drugs compared with those drugs alone.

Evidence From Clinical Trials

We describe 3 randomized, double-blind controlled trials that studied the hypoglycaemic property of MC with different preparations.

John et al. randomized 50 type 2 patients on background oral hypoglycaemic therapy to receive 6 g of dried MC a day or riboflavin as placebo, over a period of 4 weeks. FPG, PPG and fructosamine levels were measured at baseline, 2 and 4 weeks thereafter. The results did not show a significant improvement in the measured parameters at the end of the study .

Dans et al. in 2004 studied the effect of addition of commercially available MC capsule on glycaemic control in a group of poorly controlled type 2 diabetics. The patients had an HbA1C of 7-9% at baseline and were on background OHG therapy. The patients were randomized to 2 capsules of MC 3 times a day or placebo for a duration of 3 months. The trial demonstrated a mean reduction in HbA1C of 0.217%, which was not statistically significant .

Fuangchan et al. in 2007 compared 3 incremental doses of MC against a standard dose of 1 g of Metformin in newly diagnosed, treatment naïve type 2 diabetics over a period of 4 weeks. They utilized capsules of MC containing 500 mg of dried fruit pulp. There was a significant decrease in the fructosamine levels of patients receiving metformin and those on MC 2000 mg per day. However, there was no significant lowering of the FPG or the 2-h PPG in the MC group, in spite of the lowering of the fructosamine .

Regulation And Side Affects

Treatment Options Type II Diabetes with Holistic Health Practitioner

Conventional and complementary/alternative/natural medications both have side effects and drug interactions but there is an important difference. Conventional medications are carefully controlled. The ingredients are known, in exact amounts, and the quality is controlled.

Complementary/alternative/natural medicines may not be regulated in the same way. There have been several occasions when a product has been found to contain an unexpected, and potentially dangerous, ingredient and the amounts of the active ingredient may not be consistent.

Some complementary/alternative/natural medications can have a negative side effect on diabetes. For example, glucosamine which is taken to treat/prevent arthritis may increase insulin resistance in animals and might increase blood glucose levels in people.

Complementary medicines may be natural but they are not necessarily safe. Just like conventional medicine, they can have side effects or interact with other medications, conventional, complementary or alternative.

Always check complementary medicines with your doctor prior to use.

Complementary medicine is used with conventional therapy, whereas Alternative medicine is used instead of conventional medicine. These agents seem to have become an attractive option because of the lesser-perceived adverse reactions in comparison to prescription medications. CAM incorporates herbal remedies and other forms of therapy like acupuncture, faith healing, massage therapy, hypnosis and music therapy .

An Alternative Treatment For Type 1 Diabetes May Be Close

Diabetes is a disease suffered by more than 25 million people nationwide and is divided into two categories, Type 1 and Type 2. Though they share many similarities, there are distinct differences between them. Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which insulin-producing cells have been destroyed and the body is unable to produce the hormone Type 2 diabetes exists when the body is not able to produce enough insulin or the body has developed a resistance to insulin. Of the two, Type 2 diabetes is most often a result of lifestyle, developing due to being overweight, having a poor diet, and a lack of exercise. While it is also treated with insulin, its effects can be reversed.

Type 1 diabetes, on the other hand, is believed to be the result of genetic factors or exposure to certain viruses and currently has no cure. It typically appears in childhood or adolescence and is most likely to develop between the ages of 4 and 7 and then again between 10 and 14 years. More than 1.25 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with diabetes and must receive diabetes treatment, which is most often insulin injections, for the rest of their lives.

Herbs And Supplements For Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a lifelong condition that affects the blood sugar and insulin levels in the body. Treatments include lifestyle strategies and sometimes medication, but some complementary therapies, such as herbs and supplements, may help.

In diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin, or it produces insulin that it does not use effectively.

Herbs and supplements cannot cure diabetes and or be a standalone treatment. But some, in combination with conventional treatment, may provide relief from diabetes symptoms and reduce the risk of complications.

In this article, learn about seven herbs and supplements that may benefit people with type 2 diabetes.

Aloe vera is a common plant with various uses. Many people are aware of its benefits for the skin, but it may have others, including slowing the progress of type 2 diabetes.

One review, published in 2013, looked at the use of aloe vera to treat symptoms of diabetes in rats. The findings suggested that aloe vera might help protect and repair the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. The researchers believed that this might be due to aloes antioxidant effects.

A 2016 study showed that aloe vera may help lower levels of both fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1C. The A1C test is one test that helps doctors diagnose and monitor diabetes.

The authors of a 2020 found other evidence to support the earlier findings and also concluded that aloe vera may help:
