There are three insulins available at Walmart for the price of $25 NPH, Regular, and 70/30 . NPH was first approved by the FDA in 1950, Regular was approved in 1982, 70/30 in 1989.

The drug is technically considered, ‘behind the counter,’ since you can’t pick it off a shelf, but have to get it through the pharmacy.

Walmart’s New Insulin Still Too Expensive Advocates Say

The retail giant Walmart has launched its first private brand of analog insulin in the United States, called ReliOn , but some advocates worry the lower-cost drug is still too expensive for many.

The products will be available at Walmart pharmacies this week and at Sam’s Club pharmacies across the U.S. by mid-July. Like the brand-name Novolog, they will also be manufactured by Novo Nordisk and will require a prescription.

The new product will cost $72.88 per vial and $85.88 for a package of FlexPens. This represents savings of 58% to 75% off the cash price of branded analog products, or up to $101 per branded vial and $251 per FlexPens package, according to the company. Walmart’s other ReliOn insulins â NPH, Regular, and 70/30 mix â are all human insulin rather than analog insulin, and sell for about $25 a vial. The similar apid-acting lispro analog insulin retails for about $150 a vial.

Analog insulin differs from human insulin the former is typically lab-made and is considered to be more effective and easier to administer than human insulin.

One Quick Fix To Improve Insulin Access

Lately theres been more attention on the insulin pricing problem. Members of Congress have been pressuring drug companies and pharmacy benefit managers to bring insulin costs under control. Last Wednesday, the insurance behemoth Cigna, and its pharmacy benefit arm Express Scripts, announced a new program thatll cap the 30-day cost of insulin at $25. Thats a 40 percent reduction from the $41.50-per-month fee people with Express Scripts benefits were paying in 2018.

This week, Sanofi announced it will offer its insulin products at $99 per month for uninsured patients.

But like the Walmart option, these programs amount to Band-Aid solutions, said Elizabeth Pfiester, the founder and executive director of T1International.

With Walmart, patients are having to revert to an older insulin that can damage you, she said. Meanwhile, the Sanofi and Cigna programs can be shut down or rescinded at any time. Thats not any kind of assurance for patients.

Patients will not fall for these fake measures that do nothing to solve the crisis we are facing, she added.

Theres one way the insulin drug pricing problem could be fixed, however: lowering the price of insulin, said Yales Lipska. Ultimately, its the list price thats hurting patients. I keep going back to that: Just fix the list price.

The Pros And Cons Of Using Otc Insulin To Manage Diabetes

Cost and access are the two big benefits of over-the-counter insulin, says Trujillo.

Safety in emergency situations is another pro. For example, OTC is a good option if youre out of insulin in an emergency or while traveling, says Goldstein. In this case, contact your healthcare provider immediately about how to use these insulins.

They are safe and effective, when used properly with the correct supervision, says Goldstein. An article published in July 2017 in JAMA pointed out that human insulin is an effective, less-expensive option for people with type 2 diabetes.

On the other hand, people with diabetes, especially type 1 diabetes, may find older insulins more difficult and dangerous.

Trujillo says that it can be more challenging to use older insulin to mimic what a normal, functioning pancreas does. For example, people with type 1 diabetes using older insulin have higher rates of low blood glucose, according to an article published in October 2014 in The BMJ. Low blood glucose is a serious issue, especially with repeated incidents over a lifetime, which can lead to seizures, cognitive impairment, loss of work productivity, and even a higher risk of early death, according to a review published in January 2019 in the journal Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome.

Dr. Goldstein decided to research OTC insulin because she prescribes ReliOn brand insulin as the least expensive option for people without health insurance in her clinical practice. Insulin prices have risen dramatically in recent years, nearly tripling from 2002 to 2013 according to an article published in April 2016 in the Journal of the American Medical Association . In March 2019, Eli Lilly announced it would sell a cheaper generic version of its Humalog 100 insulin for about $137 a vial, effectively cutting the price of the original in half. Other fixes include Cigna and Express Scripts offering a $25 cap on out-of-pocket insulin costs for its consumers in participating plans.

Jennifer Trujillo, PharmD, CDE, associate professor at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Aurora, says she also has patients ask about cheaper options. I think we have to accept the fact that some patients dont have an option but to use the least expensive option available, says Dr. Trujillo. For some patients, this is the only alternative they have.

Besides people without health insurance, Trujillo says that people with high copays or high-deductible plans might be considering OTC insulin. People on Medicare in the donut hole, a coverage gap where patients are often pay more for drugs, might be paying more out-of-pocket for insulin and looking for relief.

Verify: Yes Walmart Does Sell $25 Insulin Without Prescription Or Insurance

GREENSBORO, N.C. The words inexpensive and medicine usually do not go together. Even with insurance, some prescriptions cost hundreds of dollars. Insulin for diabetes is one of the most expensive drugs on the market.

That’s why, perhaps, an old Facebook post has re-surfaced. It is by a woman who claims anyone can go to a Walmart pharmacy without a prescription, ask the pharmacist not to run it through insurance and walk away with $25-insulin. The woman claimed had she filed it with insurance, it would have cost more than $400 a month.

McInnis explained since 2000, Walmart has sold ReliOn insulin, the only private insulin brand on the market retailing at $24.88 per vial. It comes in ReliOn Novolin regular, ReliOn Novolin NPH and ReliOn Novolin 70-30 mix.

McInnis said negotiations have allowed the company to keep the price at $24.88 per vial since 2011.

In November last year, Walmart launched the ReliOn Novolin 70-30 insulin pen. The cash price for a pack of five pens is $42.88, compared to $300 for the brand name option.

The initial post claimed Walmart sells insulin as an over-the-counter item, but McInnis indicated that claim is misleading. Walmart does sell the insulin without a prescription, but it is located behind the pharmacy counter. The customer must visit the pharmacy to get it. It cannot be ordered online and shipped.

Is This Generic Insulin

Not exactly, though many in the Diabetes Community may describe it as such.

The term generic has been loosely applied to copycat versions of name brand insulins sold at lower prices, or to older, less reliable forms of human insulin. But the reality is there are no true generic insulins available defined as chemically identical to brand-name products and with the same efficacy, but sold at much cheaper prices.

This is also not the same as the that both Lilly and Novo launched in 2019 as half-priced versions of their main insulins Lillys version of Humalog is known as insulin lispro, while Novos version of Novolog is named insulin aspart. It can get a bit confusing, because those two names are technically the scientific names of the particular insulins.

For this new offering, Walmart is simply buying Novolog insulin before it is packaged under that regulated product label, and instead labeling it as ReliOn Novolog to be sold exclusively at Walmart and its affiliate stores like Sams Club.

This is considered a private label approval and Walmart is a private label distributor, which does not participate in the manufacture or processing of a drug but instead markets and distributes under its own trade name and labels a drug product made by someone else, Novos Bachner told DiabetesMine.

So, you can see that the terminology is mired in technicality, but that doesnt matter to most of us just trying to get our insulin at an affordable price.

What Is Novolog Flexpen

Novolin 70/30 ReliOn FlexPen â adaconsumerguide

Controlling high glucose levels can help prevent complications from diabetes, including kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. By controlling your diabetes mellitus, you can also lessen your chances of heart attack and stroke, especially if you have a history of heart disease.

Although similar to natural insulin produced in the body, Novolog Flexpen contains insulin aspart, which is man-made insulin. Insulin aspart works faster than your body’s insulin and is necessary when the body cant produce enough insulin or the bodys insulin does not function properly. Novolog Flexpen works by helping glucose get into cells so that your body can use it for energy. Typically, Novolog Flexpen is used along with a medium or long-acting insulin product.
