Saliva Glucose Biosensor: How It Works

How to Use FreeStyle Precision Neo Blood Glucose Meter, Lancets and Test Strips

The saliva test makes painful finger-prick testing for type 1 and type 2 diabetes obsolete, representing the first major innovation since the blood glucose test was developed in the 1960s.

Professor Dastoor attributes this, in part, to inspiration from his wife, who as a primary school teacher helped young children in her care to monitor their blood glucose levels.

Its a heartbreaking scenario when the lunch bell rings and everyone runs to the playground, bar an unfortunate few who stay back to surrender their finger for blood testing at every meal time, Professor Dastoor said.

Our vision was to create a world where no one needs to bleed in order to eat.

With saliva glucose concentrations 100 times lower than in blood, this was easier said than done.

One of our key challenges was the sheer unavailability of glucose in saliva. It exists in minute concentrations, so you need to develop an incredibly powerful platform to detect it. Saliva also contains a plethora of other substances, so youve then got to tune out a lot of noise to ensure results are accurate, Professor Dastoor said.

Professor Dastoor said the sensor, similar in size to a stick of chewing gum and considerably thinner, was incredibly powerful, detecting substances that exist in saliva in minute concentrations.

With this highly sensitive platform, we can now detect glucose at the levels found in saliva, for the first time, Professor Dastoor said.

Who Is Freestyle Lite For

The FreeStyle Lite is perfect for those with a busy lifestyle.

Since its the smallest meter in the Freestyle family, its compact enough to take almost anywhere. It has incredible speed, producing results in seconds, and the user-friendly features mean no fuss. No coding is required, and it stores up to 400 results.

If using a blood glucose monitor stresses you out, the FreeStyle Lite was designed for comfort. The blood sample size is one of the smallest on the market and the meter uses ZipWik Tab on FreeStyle Lite blood glucose test strips. These were made to easily wick the blood into the strip.

There are also alternate test sites for when you want to give your fingers a break, such as the upper arm, forearm, thigh, and calf.

Available since 2007, this is one of the top-selling brands of glucose fingerstick meters available in the United States.

Its fairly small and portable, measuring 4.10 x 2.60 x 7.30 inches, and weighing just over 8 ounces. This meter takes the industrys smallest blood sample sizes, just 0.3 microliters.

The FreeStyle Lite gives you a result in 5 seconds. It stores up to 400 blood sugar results and offers averages for the past 7, 14, and 30 days.

For tracking and analyzing your glucose data, the FreeStyle Lite is compatible with Abbotts FreeStyle Auto-Assist software and LibreView for Mac and Windows.

This slightly modified version of the basic FreeStyle Lite meter has been available since 2008.

Diabetes Forum The Global Diabetes Community Find support, ask questions and share your experiences. Join the community I’m sure this has been asked before but can I get a free blood monitor, lances etc on the nhs. I’ve just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but haven’t seen anyone properly yet concerning how to manage it. I’m not on insulin or tablets yet. Thanks in advance, roy. Hi, the general answer is no you can as NHS very short sighted regarding type 2’s and testing. Sneaky way of getting a meter is to look on the net and find the cheapest test strips and tell the manufacture you are type 1 they send you a free meter then. As @CarbsRok says the NHS are in general, V. short sighted re testing. However it is not the NHS who hand out the meters, it is the manufacturers and you don’t have to be T1, just be using enough strips to make the manufacturers feel it is worthwhile giving you a freebie meter1 the strips you will probably have to fund yourself , ditto the lancets. You just have to work out whether it will be cheaper l ong-term to use a free meter & buy their strips or buy a meter like a “codefree” and buy their cheaper strips!Continue reading > >

How Do You Get A Blood Glucose Monitor

Your doctor or nurse will give you a blood glucose meter for free if you have type 1 diabetes or treat your diabetes with medication that can cause hypos. On rare occasions you will get a prescription instead. Remember, you don’t pay for prescriptions if you have diabetes and its treated with any type of medication.

If you have diabetes that isnt treated with medication that causes hypos then you might not be able to get a blood glucose monitor from the NHS. This is because the current NICE recommendations are that self-monitoring blood sugar isn’t right for everyone with diabetes. You should check with your healthcare team if you want to self-monitor.

There are many different types of blood glucose meters available. That means you may not get the one you’ve read about or want from your doctor or nurse. But they should provide you with a monitor that meets your needs for blood sugar checking

You can also buy a blood glucose meter from a pharmacy or online. Our shop sells meters and test strips. You should speak with your healthcare team before you buy your own meter.

Tips To Make Glucose Monitoring Easier

Whether youre using a traditional finger-prick monitor or a CGM for your diabetes management, here are some tips to make checking your glucose easier:

  • Always wash your hands with soap and water before checking your glucose for a more accurate result. Do not use hand sanitizer before doing finger sticks.
  • If inserting a sensor into your skin for a CGM, be sure to wash the area of skin with soap and water and allow it to dry first.
  • Change any sensors by the recommended manufacturer time for example, every 14 days for the FreeStyle Libre and every 10 days for the Dexcom G6.
  • If using finger strips, you may experience less pain by using the side of your fingertip closer to your fingernail.
  • Even if youre using a CGM, you may consider having a traditional meter on hand to double-check your glucose readings. This is in case you experience symptoms of high or low blood sugar despite a normal reading.
