No-needle glucose check

Testing your blood sugar is crucial to diabetes management. Using a meter or continuous glucose monitoring can provide accurate results. But you might seek a pain-free method to check blood sugar.

Talk with your doctor or a certified diabetes educator. You might be a candidate for a glucose monitoring device that involves fewer finger pricks or no finger pricks.

Additionally, making a few adjustments in the way you collect your blood sample might reduce the level of pain and discomfort.

According to a 2017 report, more than 100 million Americans suffer from some form of diabetes or pre-diabetes. This means that there is a huge proportion of the population whose lives depend on a strict regimen of a low glycemic index diet and regular monitoring of glucose levels.

Getting diagnosed with diabetes is a life-changing moment for many people. One of the most drastic changes that a diabetic must go through is the need to monitor blood glucose levels regularly. This can be a painful and tedious commitment. Can non-invasive glucose monitors provide relief for diabetics? Are they just as reliable and accurate? What are the best ones available today?

How To Test Your Blood Sugar

Whether you test several times a day or only once, following a testing routine will help you prevent infection, return true results, and better monitor your blood sugar. Heres a step-by-step routine you can follow:

  • Wash your hands with warm, soapy water. Then dry them well with a clean towel. If you use an alcohol swab, be sure to let the area dry completely before testing.
  • Prepare a clean lancet device by inserting a clean needle. This is a spring-loaded device that holds the needle, and its what youll use to prick the end of your finger.
  • Remove one test strip from your bottle or box of strips. Be sure to close the bottle or box completely to avoid contaminating the other strips with dirt or moisture.
  • All modern meters have you insert the strip into the meter before you collect blood, so you can add the blood sample to the strip when its in the meter. With some older meters, you put the blood on the strip first, and then put the strip in the meter.
  • Stick the side of your fingertip with the lancet. Some blood sugar machines allow for testing from different sites on your body, such as your arm. Read your devices manual to make sure youre drawing blood from the correct place.
  • Wipe off the first drop of blood, and then collect a drop of blood on the test strip, making sure you have an adequate amount for a reading. Be careful to let only the blood, not your skin, touch the strip. Residue from food or medication may affect the tests results.

    Diabetes Testing And Monitoring

If you have diabetes, blood glucose monitoring can help you keep your glucose levels within a target range by balancing food, exercise and insulin, reducing your chances of diabetes complications. A range of testing and monitoring equipment is available to help people manage their diabetes. Your doctor or diabetes nurse or educator can advise you on the most appropriate equipment for you and your situation.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners recommends that if you have type 2 diabetes and take oral medication only, you should talk to your doctor or specialist about the need to test your blood sugar levels at home, as most people in this situation do not need to do this type of monitoring. UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. Noninvasive glucose monitoring devices are not currently commercially available in the United States, so people with diabetes must collect blood samples or use sensors embedded under the skin to measure their blood sugar levels. Now, with a new wearable device created by Penn State researchers, less intrusive glucose monitoring could become the norm.

Led by Huanyu Larry Cheng, Dorothy Quiggle Career Development Professor in Penn State’s Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, the researchers published the details of the noninvasive, low-cost sensor that can detect glucose in sweat in Biosensors and Bioelectronics. The paper, available online, will publish in the journals December print issue.

The researchers constructed the device first with laser-induced graphene , a material consisting of atom-thick carbon layers in various shapes. With high electrical conductivity and a convenient fabrication time of just seconds, LIG appeared to be an ideal framework for the sensing device but there was a significant caveat.

The challenge here is that LIG is not sensitive to glucose at all, Cheng said. So, we needed to deposit a glucose-sensitive material onto the LIG.

Buying A Cgm Or Flash Glucose Monitor

If you dont qualify for a flash glucose monitor or CGM, your main option is to self-fund a device. Its expensive so if its something youre thinking of doing, its worth speaking to your healthcare team first to see if they think its something that would suit you.

There is only one flash glucose monitor manufactured at the moment. This is called the Freestyle Libre (the Freestyle Libre2, The newest model has alarms for predicted high or low blood sugar levels. But when the alarm does sound you still have you scan your arm to check your blood sugar level.

Both a CGM And a flash glucose monitor are offered on the NHS to people who qualify and are also available to buy.

How Does A Continuous Glucose Monitor Work

A CGM works through a tiny sensor inserted under your skin, usually on your belly or arm. The sensor measures your interstitial glucose level, which is the glucose found in the fluid between the cells. The sensor tests glucose every few minutes. A transmitter wirelessly sends the information to a monitor.

The monitor may be part of an insulin pump or a separate device, which you might carry in a pocket or purse. Some CGMs send information directly to a smartphone or tablet. Several models are available and are listed in the American Diabetes Associations product guide.

What If Your Glucose Levels Are Abnormal

Health conditions such as diabetes and hypoglycemia will obviously have a big impact on your blood sugar levels. Pregnancy can also affect your blood sugar, which sometimes results in gestational diabetes for the duration of the pregnancy.

The American Diabetes Association points out that every persons recommended blood sugar level is different and is based on several health factors. But, in general, the target range for glucose levels in diabetes is 80 to 130 milligrams/deciliter before eating and less than 180 mg/dl after a meal.

If your glucose levels dont fall within the normal range, you and your doctor will need to make a plan to determine the reason why. Additional testing for diabetes, hypoglycemia, certain medical conditions, and other endocrine issues may be necessary to identify why your blood sugar is too high or too low.

Continue to monitor your blood glucose levels while you wait on test appointments or test results. If you experience any of the following symptoms, let your doctor know right away:

    Constant Blood Glucose Monitoring

The new system, cutely named the Flash, is made up of a small plastic sensor and a mobile device. The sensor is placed just below the skin surface and analyzes the blood directly. People can insert the sensor themselves with an included applicator.

It takes about 12 hours for the sensor to acclimate to your blood data, though can last up to 10 days. Once inserted, the sensor continuously monitors blood sugar levels until replaced. The data can easily be collected by waving a mobile device over the insert. The data will upload to the device and provide accurate and immediate results.

To replace it, you simply peel the sensor off and stick a new one on.

This device can be absolutely life-saving for many diabetics, particularly those with type 1 diabetes.

It is also especially helpful for those with type 2 diabetes, as many complications from type 2 diabetes can be avoided with stabilized glucose levels.

Another needleless system already exists, though it requires a doctors visit every two weeks. The benefit of this new system is that it comes with an applicator, making it more approachable from home.

This product is fairly new to the US as it was only recently approved by the FDA. The price point hasnt been set yet, though they typically go for about $70 in Europe. If youre interested in using this needleless system, talk to your doctor right away.

Normal Blood Sugar Levels For Adults With Diabetes

Normally, your pancreas releases insulin when your blood sugar, or âblood glucose,â gets high â after a meal, for example. That signals your body to absorb glucose until levels get back to normal.

But if you have diabetes, your body doesnât make insulin or doesnât respond to it normally . That can leave your blood sugar too high for too long. Over time, that can damage nerves and blood vessels and lead to heart disease and other problems.

If you have diabetes, your doctor may ask you to keep track of your blood sugar by testing it at home with a special device called a blood glucose monitor or home blood sugar meter. It takes a small sample of blood, usually from the tip of your finger, and measures the amount of glucose in it.

Follow your doctorâs instructions about the best way to use your device.

Your doctor will tell you when and how to test your blood sugar. Each time you do it, log it in a notebook or online tool or in an app. The time of day, recent activity, your last meal, and other things can all affect whether a reading will be of concern to your doctor. So try to log relevant information like:

    • What medication and dosage you took
    • What you ate, when you ate, or whether you were fasting
    • How much, how intense, and what kind of exercise you were doing, if any

That will help you and your doctor see how your treatment is working.
