Why Type 2 Diabetes Can Cause Weight Loss

One of the early signs of type 2 diabetes is unplanned weight loss and not just a pound or two. Unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more in a short period of time is cause for concern, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The culprit? Insulin resistance.

“If the body is not able to sensitize insulin, meaning it’s not taking glucose from the blood and into the cells to be used as energy, the body will need to find an alternative energy source. It may then turn to utilizing fat and/or muscle as its energy source,” explains Maya Feller, RD, CDN, a dietitian who specializes in nutrition for chronic disease prevention. “The net effect is unintentional weight loss.”

Feller notes, though, that this is more common when someone has type 1 diabetes.

Can The Diabetes Drug Trulicity Cause Weight Loss

Why Does Diabetes Cause Some to Gain Weight & Others to Lose It?

My doctor suggested I use Trulicity. I heard that one of the main “side effects” is that it also causes weight loss, which I could do with. He explained it to me but I did not understand everything he said, and I thought I could just see on the internet later.

I am curious if there are people here who use Trulicity and if they have seen weight loss. I would also like to know how common the side effects of Trulicity, such as nausea and bowel changes, are. I do not look forward to that part and I am wondering if I can escape it.

Trulicity works by stimulating insulin production and inhibiting glucagon. It also slows down digestion and causes weight loss to the point it’s also known as “Trulicity weight loss drug” among people who are interested in weight loss. The good thing is that you need to take it only once a week, it’s injected.

A lot of people initially experience a myriad of side effects on Trulicity. Nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating, indigestion, and a lack of appetite are all pretty common. Few people on Trulicity will say they didn’t experience any of these. You shouldn’t get urticaria, breathing difficulties, swelling, or bad pain on your upper abdomen though. If you do, you need a doctor.

Are There Any Foods Or Medications You Should Avoid While On Ozempic

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you are on Ozempic.

First, youll want to limit how much alcohol youre drinking while taking Ozempic, especially if you are diabetic. Alcohol can have an effect on your blood sugar, and there is a risk that it may drop too low in combination with Ozempic, especially if you are drinking on an empty stomach. Alcohol can irritate your stomach, too. This might make you feel worse in combination with some of the GI side effects from the medication.

Youll also want to exercise caution if you are taking any oral medications. Since Ozempic slows down gastric emptying, this can potentially impact the amount of oral medication your body is absorbing. And while trials havent shown this to be significant with Ozempic, youll want to make sure your provider is aware of any other medications you are taking before starting Ozempic.

If you are looking to combine Ozempic with other weight-loss medications, including over-the-counter supplements and herbal preparations, youll want to discuss that with your provider first, as well.

How Is It A Symptom Of Diabetes

The Cause of Type 2 Diabetes and Why You Don’t Lose Weight | Dr Neal Barnard

It can be of concern if body cells dont get enough glucose, or blood sugar, because our body cells need energy to function and carry out all the cellular processes that keep our body functioning.

If body cells dont receive enough energy, they must get it from somewhere. Generally, they will pull energy from fat and muscle, causing weight loss.

The combined affect of the three polys, polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia, increase the chances of weight loss. Blood sugar is not getting to the cells, so the person experiencing these symptoms often feels hungry all the time .

The person who is developing diabetes will also have frequent urination, or polyuria. Sugar is lost through the urine more often, so calories are lost. With polydipsia, or frequent thirst, the body becomes dehydrated from loss of urine and thats when the thirst sets in.

All these affects combined set the recipe for rapid weight loss, especially when referring to Type 1 Diabetes. When Type 1 Diabetes first sets in, the person will experience very high blood sugars, often greater than 1,000 mg/dL.

The person is essentially in Diabetic Ketoacidosis, and the body has started to shut down insulin production. This produces ketones, which are essentially acids in the blood. When theres no insulin or insulin levels are very low, muscle and fat is used as fuel for the body causing weight loss.

Weve put together some 7-day meal plans to help you lose weight. They’re all clinically approved, nutritionally balanced, calorie and carb counted, and can help if you want to lose weight:

Evidence shows that the best approach is the one that youre likely to stick to. So the key is to find a plan that you enjoy and fits in with the rest of your life. Everyones different and what works for some may not for others.

Why Does Diabetes Cause Rapid Weight Loss

So, Im going to assume that youre talking about type 1 diabetes. There are two types of diabetes that are distinctly different metabolic disorders. The answer to your question is the effects of insulin in the body. When type 1s lose their production of insulin, their bodies no longer are able to store fat or even utilize what blood sugar is being produced by the body. This causes the body to basically consume first fat and then even lean muscle mass. If you look at left hand picture of this type 1 before the discovery of insulin youll see the emaciated look of someone starving. The picture on the right shows a more normal body weight after insulin injections were started. So, for type 1s the lack of insulin can cause rapid weight loss. The lack of insulin causes the body to start basically eating itself. Type 2s can lose weight if their bodies stop producing insulin however, for most type 2s things work in reverse. They have a problem of insulin resistance caused by too much insulin in their system. Too much insulin normally causes the type 2s to store fat and gain weight. Thats the connection between type 2 diabetes and obesity.Continue reading > >
