Proper Hazardous Waste And Sharps Disposal

Proper disposal is being considerate of others. Leaving hazardous medical waste around is risky for anyone, particularly children who may not be aware of the risks and safety hazards. Hazardous waste is not something you should be re-using. Make sure to dispose of per instructions and label!

Always dispose of medical waste after single-use.

Do not clip used needles or alter it as this is prone to an entirely new set of risks. Safe needle disposal is just disposing of the entire needle, preferably with the cap on. The same idea goes for lancets–do not try to alter the lancet for re-use.

To properly dispose of your used lancets and needles, you need a robust container that can be completely sealed and accurately labeled–you can also use this same container to dispose of your test strips as well, but be sure to follow any disposal instructions that are specific to your test strips.

Containers that are sufficient for sharps and hazardous waste disposal are heavy plastic containers like detergent bottles or metal or plastic boxes with a fastening sealing mechanism. You can also find containers specifically made for this type of disposal at stores and pharmacies. Never use glass or a clear plastic bottle like a water bottle or drink bottle, and always seal containers with heavy duct tape to ensure they stay safely closed.

Label the container USED SHARPS: DO NOT RECYCLE. Keep the container out of the reach of children or other vulnerable populations.

Onetouch Verio Test Strips

The same proprietary test strips are used in each of the OneTouch Verio meters. They do not work in older meters such as the OneTouch Ultra 2, which uses a different brand of strips. The Verio strips require a small blood sample size of just 0.4 micro-liters and provide a result within 5 seconds.

They are designed a bit differently than other strips, in that they have a two-pronged fork edge that you insert into the meter. You then apply the droplet of blood onto the top edge of the other end of these thin strips.

LifeScan claims that Verio meters go above and beyond the current accuracy standard nearly 100 percent of the time. However, a Diabetes Technology Society analysis in 2018 of more than a dozen different fingerstick meters showed the OneTouch Verio meters were middle of the pack as far as accuracy, when compared to other major brands available.

DiabetesMines own managing editor Mike Hoskins found the Reflect meter to be consistent with his Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor results, and an average of other backup fingerstick meters he used to compare results.

Keep in mind that glucose meter results do fluctuate in real-world settings. The meter can still be a very helpful tool even if precise numbers vary by 10 or 20 points.

The initial setup took a little work to get the meter to connect to my phone. Once connected, it took a few tries to get the meter to sync up with app. The app could use some work. The graph is helpful.

I ordered test strips on a Saturday and got a notice same day that the order was fulfilled and being sent out. I got them on a Tuesday, well packaged. I shopped prices around on them, and this was reasonable and a good price for me. I decided that I should purchase a backup meter and again, Diabetic Warehouse had the best price and again it was shipped right out to me. LifeScan is recalling and replacing all OneTouch® Verio®IQ Meters because at extremely high blood glucose levels of 1024 mg/dL and above, the meter will not provide a warning that the blood glucose is extremely high and will shut off, thereby potentially leading to incorrect treatment and delaying proper treatment.

I wish Id been warned it was time-sensitive. I was taking too long to get enough blood, and then it didnt work. One of the circles had agglutination right away, but by the time I was done getting blood in each circle, and Id stirred each, the agglutination no longer showed and none of the circles had agglutination.

I did add a little more water to each at one point out of fear it would evaporate before I was done, but it didnt seem like too much watermaybe thats why it didnt work.

Be sure you understand the instructions before you begin. For one thing blood is to rotated in circle. Luckily we had lancets from husband taking daily blood sugar readings because lancet supplied broke when readying to use.

Not sure what we did to cause breakage. After several pricks, we did get enough blood to complete the test. Again luckily we had personal blood sugar lancet.

Instructions were easy to follow. Used the video prior to opening the test kit and was able to breeze through the procedure without a hitch. Laminated the dried card and placed it in my med file. Well worth the expenditure for the peace of mind.
