Diabetes is an ongoing disease that affects over 11% of people in the United States. Lawton Community Health Center is proud to help Southwest Oklahomans with our diabetes management clinic. We teach adult and teen patients and their families how to manage diabetes. Managing includes knowing what tools to use and how to use them for your treatment.

Whats The Difference Between Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a rare autoimmune disease in which the body cant produce insulin, a substance your body needs to control blood sugar.

Type 2 diabetes is most common. With Type 2 diabetes, the body cant use the insulin you produce like it once did, making it increasingly difficult to control your blood sugar. You may be at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes if you:

  • Are overweight or lack physical activity
  • Are over the age of 45
  • Have a family history of Type 2 diabetes
  • Are a woman diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy

Do You Know Your Abc’s

*ABC is A1C , B is blood pressure, and C is cholesterol. It is important to know YOUR numbers.

    What To Watch Out For

    Your doctor will help you learn what blood sugar levels make it a good or bad time to exercise. He or she will also explain how to take action and get back in the game. If you notice any of the signs listed below, stop exercising and follow your diabetes management plan.

    You may have low blood sugar if you are:

    You may have high blood sugar if you:

    • feel very thirsty
    • have to pee a lot
    • feel very tired
    • have blurry vision

    Also, keep an eye on any cuts, scrapes, or blisters, and talk to your doctor if they’re really red, swollen, or oozing pus these could be signs of infection.

    Food I wouldnt eat: Liver. I worry about the heavy metals and other poisons that cows have been exposed to or given in their food or vaccines. If you are going to eat liver, it should be organic.

    Food I would recommend: Salmon. It’s a delicious source of protein with healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and it’s high in a number of different vitamins, including Vitamins D, B12, and B6, niacin, magnesium, and selenium. It’s a very versatile fish that can be prepared a number of different ways. I like mine grilled! Whenever possible, I prefer mine to be wild-caught Alaskan salmon, since it is usually lower in mercury levels.
