ICE CREAM CHALLENGE!!! Type 1 Diabetic Does 17 Flavor Taste Test!

Net carbs: 2 g

Calories per serving: 100

Review score: 4 stars

This is a pretty awesome tasting ice cream. They recommend that you leave it out for 5-15 minutes before eating but I found it scoopable and really good already after 5 minutes .

The Brownies & Cookie Dough Ice Cream packs a punch when it comes to both flavor and texture. Its a white chocolate ice cream base with chunks of cookie dough, brownie, and chocolate chunks. Yummy.

The only reason I dont give this ice cream a higher score is that a serving size is relatively small and I did find that it had a minor blood sugar impact despite only listing 2 grams of net carbs.

The ice cream is sweetened with Erythritol and has traces of brown sugar, but I didnt see a spike in my blood sugar right away, so I expect the slight blood sugar increase comes mostly from the lactose since the ice cream is based on skim milk.

Tips For Choosing Ice Cream

There are so many ways to approach ice cream, including the option to avoid it altogether and go for something less likely to raise your blood sugar, such as a sugar-free Fudgsicle. But if that craving for ice cream refuses to budge, here are some suggestions to satisfy your sweet tooth without dealing with high blood sugars later on.

· Check the Nutrition Facts Label for the serving size . Measure out the portion into a small bowl rather than eating straight from the container.

· Go for ice cream that is cold-churned, which is a process that gives reduced-fat ice cream a smoother, creamier texture.

· Shy away from ice cream mixed with candy or cookie dough mix-ins add extra calories and carbs.

· Remember to count the carbs in the ice cream. A 15-gram-carb serving is equal to one carb choice, so swap out a carb food at your meal or snack for a serving of ice cream.

· If you struggle with controlling your ice cream portions, try another type of frozen treat that contains ice cream, such as an ice cream sandwich.

· Checking your blood sugar with your meter or referring to your CGM 1 to 2 hours after eating ice cream can give you useful information about its effect on your glucose levels.

· Doing some form of physical activity after eating ice cream can help prevent your glucose from spiking.

How Much Am I Scooping Out

Turn around any container of ice cream and youll likely see on the Nutrition Facts label that the serving size is a half cup. A level half cup. Thats the same size as those little single-serving containers of Jello pudding or Activia yogurt. Yep, four or five bites and its all over.

So unless youre being really careful , youre probably scooping out at least a cup, which means twice the calories, twice the artery clogging saturated fat, and twice the sugar thats listed on the label.

Takeaway Ice Creams Milkshakes & Iced Drinks

Its very easy to grab an iced coffee, milkshake or ice cream after eating a meal as a treat, or as a snack, but do you know how much extra sugar you are drinking or eating when having these treats?

Take a look at the tables below where I have shared the number of carbs per ice cream or drink and I have also shown how many teaspoons of sugar the amount of carbs converts to:

Best Budget Higher Protein Ice Cream Grahams Goodness And Morrisons

Lynne Chrapliwy

Coming in second place, a more budget-friendly option is Grahams family dairy Goodness ice cream . These ice creams are low in carbs, have a good amount of protein, but are also lower in fat and therefore would benefit from a little pairing to play safe. Adding some crushed nuts, or cream will help make this a more tolerable treat. There are currently 5 flavours to choose from, with 3 being more widely available: Mint Choc Chip, Salted Caramel, White Chocolate with Raspberry Ripple

Morrisons have also created a good competitor with their Salted Caramel High Protein Ice cream. Much like the Grahams Goodness ice cream, this is lower in carbs, has a good amount of protein, but is low-fat. Once again, its advisable to add some additional natural fats when eating this ice cream to reduce the postprandial spike in blood sugar levels. There is also a Choc Chip Cookie Dough flavour, but this contains more slightly more carbs.

Rebel Ice Cream Cookie Dough

Net carbs: 2 g

Calories per serving: 220

Review score: 3.5 stars

This is another high-fat ice cream and the consistency is thereafter. It never really becomes creamy but the taste is good and I really enjoyed the generous chunks of cookie dough and chocolate flakes.

Compared to many of the other ice creams I tried, this is fairly high in calories because of the fat content. Its sweetened with Erythritol and Monk Fruit only, and I found that it had a very limited impact on my blood sugar, even hours after I ate it.
