Additionally, the FreeStyle Libre sensor is made by a process which means the sensitivity of the sensors vary very little. This means that it is calibrated at the factory – so you dont need to calibrate it again using a finger prick.

Per Patient Cost Analysis
In all years, the FreeStyle Libre system is marginally more expensive than SMBG when testing 5.6 time per day because higher acquisition costs are partly offset by cost savings from reduced resource utilization .
Applying a low estimate of four tests per day, increased the difference in cost per patient per year with the FreeStyle Libre System compared with SMBG is, to £326 compared with £163 in the base-case. Cost neutrality with SMBG would be achieved when carrying out 7.3 tests per day.

Launched internationally in 2014 and first approved for use in the United States in 2017, the Libre is quickly becoming a market leader.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 is the latest model available in the United States as of mid-2020, with some important added features like glucose alerts.
Scannable sensor. Users wear a little white disc sensor about the size and thickness of two stacked quarters, and hold the handheld reader or smartphone app over it to scan it for data. The sensor measures interstitial fluid every minute. It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use only on the upper arm, and attached to the skin using an easy-push inserter device. When inserted, there is a 1-hour warmup period before glucose data is available. With just a 1-second scan, users can see their glucose reading, trend arrow, and 8-hour history.
Wear time. The latest sensor approved in the United States since 2018 lasts up to 14 days. It does not officially require any fingerstick calibrations before making insulin dosing or other treatment decisions.
Real-time alerts. This is new for the Libre 2 as of 2020. Users have an option to turn on real-time alerts, to hear a beep or feel a vibration whenever their glucose levels dip too low or high. Users can adjust the settings for their own preferences on when they want to be alerted:

Flash Sensors And Cgm Sensors
With a flash glucose monitor, sensors should be worn on the arms only. And we recommend that they arent placed over areas with tattoos as this could impact your results. With a CGM, you can wear the sensor on different parts of the body, such as your abdomen.
The sensors dont normally need to be taken off. You can usually wear them in the bath, shower and during sports. But some people do have problems with them falling off. There are adhesives you can buy to keep them in place.

Driving And Checking Your Blood Sugars Using A Cgm Or Flash
You can use a flash glucose monitor or CGM to check your sugar levels when driving, but you must confirm your levels with a finger-prick test if:
- your blood sugar level is 4 mmol/l or below
- you have symptoms of a hypo
- your monitor gives a reading thats not consistent with the symptoms youre getting for example, if you feel like youre having a hypo but the reading doesnt show this.

What Is Flash Glucose Sensor Technology
Flash glucose monitoring is sensor technology that enables you to test your glucose levels without pricking your finger. This technology is available in FreeStyle Libre and FreeStyle Libre 2. The system has two parts. A small white disc is positioned on the back of the upper arm. This holds the sensor, which is worn just under the skin. And, a reader which when held over the sensor, gives a glucose reading.
How Finger Prick Checks Differ To Cgm/flash Readings
A finger prick check tells you what your blood sugar level is at that moment.
With a flash glucose monitor or CGM, whats being measured is the amount of sugar in the fluid surrounding your cells. This is called interstitial fluid. Its not quite as accurate as a finger prick test as it lags behind blood sugar levels by up to 15 minutes. And the difference between the blood sugar and CGM or flash reading is more likely to be greater when youre eating or exercising.
So even if youre offered a flash glucose monitor or CGM by your healthcare team,its important that you still get your diabetes kit on prescription including your blood glucose meter to let you do finger prick checks. “

Alternatives To The Freestyle Libre
While the FreeStyle Libre is unique because of tiny round sensor and exceptional ease of use, there are other options to know about for continuous glucose monitoring.
The Dexcom G6 and Medtronic Minimed Guardian CGM are both more traditional CGM devices with a sensor-transmitter design that provide automatic continuous results every several minutes without needing to scan the sensor. They also have more advanced alert and alarm options, like urgent low, urgent low soon, rise rate and fall rate. And they both integrate currently with insulin pumps. But they are more expensive and require more supplies on a regular basis.
There is also an implantable CGM called Eversense by Senseonics. It is distributed by Ascensia and features an implantable sensor that stays under your skin for 90 days. You wear a transmitter on your arm, over the insertion spot, to stream glucose data continuously to your smartphone. This requires a doctors office visit to insert and remove each sensor, and some people find that they incur small scars on their arm from the procedure.
Who Should Not Use The Freestyle Libre System
Children younger than 18 years should not use this system.
The Libre has not been approved for pregnant women, people on dialysis, or those deemed critically ill.
You shouldnt try to use the FreeStyle Libre system if you are dehydrated, hypotensive, in shock, in a hyperglycemic-hyperosmolar state, or in diabetic ketoacidosis .
If you must have an MRI, CT scan, or diathermy treatment, youll need to remove the sensor.
If you have hypoglycemic unawareness, be aware that this system has not been evaluated for use in this situation. The FreeStyle Libre does not have an automatic alarm to alert you to a hypoglycemic event. It does have a sound that goes off when you scan it if your sugars are going too low, but only when you scan in. In other words, it will not wake you at night if you have a low blood sugar. Other continuous glucose monitors do have this functionality, so take that into account when making a purchasing decision.
