The root resembles an asymmetrical knot, and can be eaten raw, dried, pickled, or crystalized.

Depending on what form you are eating, ginger is very pungent and spicy, but sometimes gives a warm bite. And ginger is most definitely aromatic when used in cooking.

Nutritionally speaking, ginger is relatively low in carbs for the amount most people consume and contains many B vitamins and magnesium.

Ginger also has several wonderful health benefits. While nausea relief may be its most well known benefit, youll be interested to know ginger also offers benefits to your blood sugar and A1c.

Pregnant Women And Ginger Consumption

According to the U.S National Library of Medicine, using ginger during pregnancy is controversial.1

There is some concern that ginger might affect fetal sex hormones. There is also a report of miscarriage during week 12 of pregnancy in a woman who used ginger for morning sickness. However, studies in pregnant women suggest that ginger can be used safely for morning sickness without harm to the baby.

The risk for major malformations in infants of women taking ginger does not appear to be higher than the usual rate of 1% to 3%. Also there doesnt appear to be an increased risk of early labor or low birth weight.

There is some concern that ginger might increase the risk of bleeding, so some experts advise against using it close to your delivery date. As with any medication given during pregnancy, its important to weigh the benefit against the risk. Before using ginger during pregnancy, talk it over with your healthcare provider.

According to Maryland Medical Center2, for people who do not have medical or health conditions on the cautionary list discussed above, taking up to 4 grams of powdered ginger root per day is safe, while pregnant women should not take more than 1 g per day. According to Drugs.com3, ginger has been used in clinical trials in doses of 250 mg to 1 g, 3 to 4 times daily.

Whats good about ginger is that you can use it both in fresh or ground form. The ground form is much more concentrated, and usually when converting fresh to ground ginger, a single tablespoon of fresh ginger root is equal to 1/4 of a teaspoon of dried ginger.

Diabetic Snacks To Have With Afternoon Coffee

I have had hit or miss with sugar free sweets. Since I rarely eat a lot of carbs for any meal, I find that a real cookie does the job. I even incorporated a container of yogurt for a mid morning snack. I usually have my sweet tooth attack around 8pm so I grab a cookie or a cup of yogurt. You can freeze cookies. I don’t know about the kind with cream fillings as I don’t eat those now. If you buy large packs freezing will prevent them from going stale. I bought the Coffe Mate Mocha Cafe liquid Coffee Creamer. I add that to my afternoon cup of coffee and find I don’t want a cookie with it. My favorite sweet treat is ice cold grapes. Wouldn’t go with coffee at all, sorry! I don’t ever eat sf cookies etc., I just count the carbs in the real deal and eat less of them. Portion control is hard sometimes but if I want it badly enough I do fine with that. I don’t eat between meals at all, it makes my next reading higher than I like. I would look for oatmeal cookies or granola bars that didn’t spike my numbers to have with your coffee. Effectiveness Of Ginger In The Treatment Of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilot Study Of The Randomized Clinical Trial Type

Benefits of Ginger for Type 2 Diabetes

Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of ginger in the reduction of the glycemic, lipid and anthropometric levels in people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Materials and method: A double-blind pilot study of the randomized clinical trial type, conducted between October 2017 and January 2018. The inclusion criteria were as follows: individuals with type 2 diabetes, aged from 18 to 80 years old, using oral antidiabetic drugs, and with glycated hemoglobin values between 7 % and 10 %. The participants were randomized and allocated in two different groups. In the experimental group, the participants used 1.2 g of ginger and, in the control group, 1.2 g of placebo. The primary outcome was the reduction in blood glucose. The reduction in the lipid and anthropometric levels was the secondary outcome. The intervention lasted four weeks. Results: A total of 21 participants were included in the study. The use of 1.2 g of ginger resulted in noticeable reductions in the anthropometric and lipid levels in 30 days of follow-up, but it did not reduce the glycemic levels. Conclusions: In this study, it was shown that ginger capsules, in doses of 1.2 g a day, can help to reduce anthropometric measures and lipid levels in the population under study however, it had no effect on the glycemic levels.

1. Onto a sheet of waxed paper, sift together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. 2. In a large mixing bowl, cream the margarine and sugar substitute with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla, and molasses. Continue to beat until thoroughly mixed. Add the flour mixture and beat for 1 minute. 3. Place the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and roll into a log about 8 inches long. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze until firm, about 1 hour, reshaping the log to a circular diameter after 30 minutes. 4. Preheat oven to 350F . Line a baking sheet with baking parchment . 5. Slice the log into 36 pieces about 1/4-inch thick. Place the cookies 1 inch apart. Sprinkle each cookie with 1/8 teaspoon granulated sugar. Bake for 12 minutes, until gingersnaps crack slightly on the surface. 6. Let cool on the baking sheet for 2 to 3 minutes before transferring the cookies to a rack to cool thoroughly.
