Whey Protein Powder For Diabetes

Protein Shakes For Diabetics

I get asked a lot, âIs whey protein bad for diabetes?â and there is no right or wrong answer. Some people report whey protein causing stomach upset. If this is the case, try a plant based protein powder that utilizes multiple protein sources to ensure all essential amino acids are present. However, if you have a whey protein powder that you enjoy and tolerate well, then there is no reason to switch.

The Effects Of Protein Powder On The Blood Sugar

Most protein powders contain a maximum of 12 grams of carbohydrates per serving which can be considered as pretty low carb. Other powders such as mass gainers will contain from 30 grams of carbs upwards going as high as 120 grams per serving. Mass gainer protein powders will usually require a significant amount of insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. The higher the number of carbs the higher the risk of having a high blood sugar. The protein shake I currently use is Nitro Tech Whey Gold by Muscle Tech which contains 2 grams of carbs. 2 to 12 grams of carbs should not increase your blood sugar levels by a significant amount. For me 12 grams would raise my blood sugar by approximately 2 mmol/L. However, Ive realised that with some protein powders my blood sugar would spike although it contains relatively low carbs. Sometime I could go from 7 mmol/L to 12 or even 14 mmol/L which is insane.

After doing much research and consulting with my doctor, Ive discovered that certain amino acids in the whey protein powder specifically glucogenic amino acids, can be converted into glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis. This glucose can then increase your blood sugar level if not accounted for. On the flip side, I have used plant based protein powders and they did not have the same effect on my blood sugar level. This may be due to the lack of glucogenic amino acids and high amounts od ketogenic amino acids in this type of powder contains.

Effect Of Herbalife On Diabetic Patient Safe Or Not

Although I have talked about the safety of Herbalife products in detail in the section above, yet I feel like there are a few aspects to discuss further.

For example, if one has decided to take Herbalife products, what effects should he expect?

Well, that again is conditional to a lot of things.

For example, what age are you?

Whats your goal? Is it just nutritional support that youre seeking, or is it the diabetes-induced weight changes you want to reverse? Getting my point?

According to the research I have conducted so far, young people have been raving about the products benefits.

A young footballer expressed his views that the intake of Herbalifes nutritional products helped him lower his insulin dose and saved him from many additional health issues diabetes brings with itself.

He mentioned how he was doubtful of ever having a kid with diabetes, but supplementing Herbalifes products with healthy life choices saved him from being deprived of that !

He also added that hes doing overall great, and no side effects have kicked in so far.

Well, that was one case. I wouldnt say that youll get the exact same results as everyones built differently.

But, I can conclude one thing from this, that Herbalife Supplements can do a lot of good if taken with care.

I also want to add another thing here, that diabetes can only be dealt with by an overall healthy and balanced lifestyle. Out of which, adding Herbalife products into your daily diet would be one thing.

Enabling Safe Gradual Weight Loss

Meal replacements are high in protein and fiber. That is the reason why they can help you feel fuller for longer than typical meals. This allows you to eat fewer calories throughout the day and lose weight without your blood sugar levels spiking or dropping. Which can be a side-effect of less healthy alternatives for weight loss.

People should also make sure they do not depend only on shakes for their protein intake. That way you can miss out on minerals and other valuable nutrients that protein-rich foods contain.

Potential Impact Of Whey On Dipeptidyl Peptidase

The incretin hormones are rapidly degraded to inactive metabolites by dipeptidyl peptidase-IV . More than 50% of the GLP-1 newly secreted from intestinal L cells is degraded before reaching the systemic circulation, mainly by DPP-IV present in the endothelium of the capillary bed in close proximity to the L cells. Whey hydrolysates, produced using digestive enzymes such as pepsin and trypsin, have been found to inhibit the activity of DPP-IV in vitro. For rodents in vivo, ingestion of whey protein can reduce DPP-IV activity in the proximal small bowel, thereby increasing intact incretin hormone concentrations. Further in vivo studies, particularly in humans, are required to confirm this phenomenon, and establish its durability with long term ingestion of whey.

Many people with diabetes have probably heard about Glucerna because it is used in many shakes and bars that is designed especially for those who have a diabetic condition. This particular product is very low in calories and sugars, yet it is high in good nutrients such as proteins. Over the years there have been several studies as to the effect of Glucerna and the conclusions have been that it does offer some assistance in controlling blood sugars, but it is not considered a cure or the end-all-be-all when it comes to sugar substitutes.

Glucerna is designed to keep the effects of high blood sugar down to a minimum. The key ingredient in this product are carbohydrates which provide the body with energy, but instead of the fast digesting type that can lead to these spikes, Glucerna contains the slow digesting type that that keeps blood sugar levels reasonable. This means that people who use glucerna can worry less about having a spike in their blood sugar levels.

Glucerna And Diabetic Diet

It is necessary to understand the nutrients that are needed as a type 2 diabetes patient. Carbohydrates can raise blood glucose, but it is important to consume slow-acting carbohydrates which are referred to sometimes as low-glycemic index food.

They include

  • Whole fruits like oranges, pears, apples, and grapefruit
  • Non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, and cauliflower.

Glucerna is produced to supply the body with slow-acting carbohydrates, much like low-glycemic index foods. Diabetic patients are advised to balance their diet with low-glycemic index food for ideal nutrition, occasionally using Glucerna.

Glucerna products contain protein that may be beneficial for the patient with type 2 diabetes.

Most adults need 4b-6b grams of protein every day. Protein does not only raise blood glucose, but it also assuages hunger for a longer time, thereby helping diabetic patients not to take too much of carbs.

As a diabetic patient, if your daily diet does not contain enough protein, the content of high protein in Glucerna can help.

Can Whey Protein Help Diabetics To Reduce Weight And Blood Sugar Levels

The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes has increased markedly over the last few decades, bringing with it a long list of complications including cardiovascular disease, cancer, damage to the nervous system, eyes and kidneys, cognitive function and heightened risk of dementia. Naturally, the diagnosis impacts on quality of life, and the disease comprises a growing economic burden for society.

Timing Of Whey Protein Preloads And Gastric Emptying

The concept of a preload refers to administration of a small load of macronutrient at a fixed interval before a meal, so that the presence of nutrients in the small intestine induces the release of GLP-1 and GIP, and other gut peptides such as CCK and PYY, to slow gastric emptying and stimulate insulin secretion in advance of the main nutrient load. In health, whey protein preloads have been shown to slow gastric emptying, as assessed by the plasma concentrations of oral paracetamol given with the meal, and enhance post-prandial GLP-1 levels. Similarly, whey given immediately before a meal, with or without additional amino acids, reduces the postprandial glycaemic response by over a third , associated with an increase in the early postprandial plasma insulin and GLP-1 responses.

Comparison Of Whey And Casein Proteins

Milk proteins are an important amino acid source for young mammals they facilitate uptake of nutrients and trace elements and provide a source of bioactive peptides with a range of physiological functions. Cows milk contains about 3.5 g of protein per 100 mL, of which whey accounts for about 20% and casein 80%.

Whey consists of a heterogeneous group of proteins, including beta-lactoglobulin , alpha-lactalbumin , proteose peptone , immunoglobulins , and bovine serum albumin . When chymosin is used in the cheese-making process, glycomacropeptide – which is high in branched chain amino acids – accounts for about 12% of total protein in whey. Up to 1% of the total protein content of whey comprises low abundance proteins, including lactoferrin, and lactoperoxidase. All these proteins have been reported to have nutritional and/or physiological functions.

Insulin Whey Protein And Blood Sugar

Can Diabetic individual consume protein shakes & take multivitamins? – Ms. Sushma Jaiswal

Whey protein has a variety of characteristics that appear to be beneficial in the treatment of diabetes.

The amino acid L-cysteine is abundant in whey protein. Glutathione, one of the bodys most essential antioxidants, is made from L-cysteine. One of the underlying causes of insulin resistance is oxidative stress, which is considered to be responsible for some of the consequences of diabetes, such as peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy, and kidney damage.

When whey protein is added to a meal, it boosts insulin production and lowers blood sugar levels after that. After meals, whey protein can help diabetics lower their triglyceride levels.

Blood sugar levels were shown to be 28 percent lower in individuals who ate whey protein with their meals in recent research. Insulin levels were raised, and the insulin response was also prolonged. Although the study was tiny, with just 15 people participating, the results were significant due to the studys methodology.

Whey also offers additional benefits, such as making you feel fuller for longer periods of time, which can aid in weight reduction. Whey protein also contains anti-inflammatory properties, which can benefit overall health. Since inflammation is present in everyone with diabetes, making blood sugar management and weight reduction more difficult. Finally, whey protein appears to promote fat loss in the liver.

Diabetes And Losing Weight

If you are looking for diabetic smoothies to lose weight or nutritional drinks that can help you with this goal, you will definitely find one on this list. However, I must reinforce that the most important thing when looking to loss weight is calorie deficit. This is, you need to consume less calories than what your body needs. That way, you will burn fat stored on your body.

So what would be good diabetic weight loss shakes? In my opinion, they should be balanced, satiating, with plenty of fiber and protein. Something like Huel or Complete 360.

However, as mentioned above, ketogenic and low-carb diets have been proven to be efficient on helping lose weight to diabetics. Therefore, the best ketogenic shakes, like Ample K, can be a good tool. Nonetheless, there is a concern on the long-term efficiency due to how hard is to stick to these diets.
