Childrens Mercy Kansas City

November Lunch and Learn Features Diabetes Education

At the latest International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes conference, Endocrinology pediatric physician, Mark Clements, MD, PhD, and Endocrinology data scientist Brent Lockee, discussed the latest innovations from Rising T1DEa Childrens Mercy Kansas City-led initiative focused on scaling quality improvement efforts and innovation in Type 1 diabetes care.

In one of their several presentations, Clements and Lockee shared an update on D-Data Dock, a diabetes clinic-focused cloud data infrastructure that supports the unique goals of diabetes research and clinical care.

One of the challenges for many diabetes centers is integrating electronic medical records , diabetes self-management devices, and other data sources to track and visualize population risk. The design of the D-Data Dock helps mitigate that challenge. As a cloud-based solution, data can be stored from any of those sources, and it is automatically mapped to standard glucose, insulin, and carbohydrate schemas.

The D-Data Dock now contains device data from six vendors for more than 3,200 clinic patients, electronic health record data for more than 5,000 current and former patients, and supplemental data from a half dozen other sources.

The D-Data Dock is an exciting advancement in diabetes care, and is available for adoption in diabetes centers to help improve population health management and accelerate clinical research.

What Is The Endocrine System

The endocrine system is a complex group of glands and organs that produce and regulate hormones in the bloodstream to control many functions of the body – such as reproduction, metabolism and growth and development. Hormones also control the way you respond to your surroundings, and they help provide the proper amount of energy and nutrition your body needs to function. The major glands that make up the endocrine system include the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, adrenal, pituitary and hypothalamus.

Endocrinologists also conduct research to better understand how glands function, as well as clinical research to learn the best treatment methods. Primary care physicians refer patients to an endocrinologist when they have a problem with their endocrine system.

Why Visit An Endocrinologist

Endocrinologists are specially trained physicians who diagnose diseases related to the bodys glands. The diseases they are trained to treat including diabetes often affect other parts of the body as well. While primary care doctors know a lot about the body, they may refer you to an endocrinologist for treatment for specific conditions.

Endocrinologists know the latest and best possible treatments for hormone-related disorders, even beyond conventional treatments. He or she will work closely with your primary care doctor to take care of your condition as best as possible.

Information About The Endocrine System

Inside Pediatrics Webisode: Lorelei’s Story

The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things.

The endocrine system is made up of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries and testicles.

Hormone levels that are too high or too low indicate a problem with the endocrine system. Hormone diseases also occur if your body does not respond to hormones in the appropriate ways. Stress, infection, and changes in the blood’s fluid and electrolyte balance can also influence hormone levels.

The most common endocrine disease in the United States is diabetes, a condition in which the body does not properly process glucose, a simple sugar. Hormone imbalances can have a significant impact on the reproductive system, particularly in women. Another disorder, hypothyroidism, occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone to meet the bodys needs.

Don’t Miss: Nasal Insulin For Type 2 Diabetes

What Is Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a disorder where the body does not make enough of a hormone called insulin. Type 1 diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes. Type 1 diabetes usually starts in childhood or early adulthood. It is treated with insulin injections, which help control blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes is not the same as type 1 diabetes. The bodies of people with type 2 diabetes may produce insulin, but it may not be enough or may not be able to be used properly. Type 2 diabetes may be treated with pills instead of insulin shots. Type 2 diabetes is usually linked to being overweight. It is becoming more common in children ages 10 to 18 years old.
